Havana vs Trinidad: Skip the Crowds, Find Better

$300–$500 per week

Both cities are UNESCO-listed colonial hubs with classic cars, salsa, and Cuban culture, but Trinidad is smaller, more authentic, dramatically cheaper, and pairs beach access with mountain hiking.

🚗 Havana, Cuba

Havana's crumbling colonial grandeur, classic American cars, live salsa, and Malecón sunsets are genuinely captivating. But the city has become increasingly expensive and tourist-facing since the partial opening of travel. The peso dual-currency system has simplified but prices in the tourist economy — Habana Vieja restaurants, mojitos at the Hotel Nacional bar, Tropicana cabaret — are now comparable to European capitals. Scammers and touts target tourists heavily in Habana Vieja. The famous Floridita bar (supposedly Hemingway's haunt) is essentially a theme park. Casas particulares are the best value but book out far in advance.

💃 Trinidad, Cuba

Trinidad is Cuba's best-preserved colonial city, a UNESCO World Heritage site frozen in the 18th century when sugar wealth built its pastel-coloured mansions and cobblestone plazas. Unlike Havana, it still feels like a living Cuban town rather than a tourist stage set. The Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful squares in the Caribbean. Days can be spent exploring the Valle de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills), hiking in the Escambray Mountains, or swimming at Playa Ancón nearby. Evenings bring Casa de la Música on the cathedral steps — salsa dancing under the stars with mostly local crowds.
