Kathmandu vs Pokhara: Skip the Crowds, Find Better

$100–$200 per week

Both cities are major Nepal destinations and trekking gateways, but Pokhara is cleaner, calmer, more scenic, and slightly cheaper — with the Annapurna massif as a constant backdrop and direct lake access.

🏔️ Kathmandu, Nepal

Kathmandu is Nepal's chaotic, spiritually overwhelming capital — Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath's ghats on the Bagmati River, and the mediaeval Durbar Squares (though the 2015 earthquake damaged much of the Basantapur Durbar Square) are all profound experiences. The Thamel neighbourhood is the trekking hub and a convenient logistics base. But Kathmandu can be genuinely difficult: extreme air pollution (regularly among the world's worst), severe traffic, and the Thamel tourist area full of gear shops, travel agencies charging inflated prices, and restaurants serving pastiches of international food. For many trekkers it is an obligatory waypoint rather than a destination in itself.

🪂 Pokhara, Nepal

Pokhara sits at the gateway of the Annapurna Circuit and Base Camp treks, beside the mirror-still Phewa Lake reflecting the Annapurna and Machapuchare (Fishtail) peaks. Far more relaxed than Kathmandu and with much cleaner air, Pokhara has a lakeside café and restaurant scene, excellent yoga retreats, and paragliding above the valley as one of the world's best-rated flights. The International Mountain Museum provides excellent context for Himalayan geography and climbing history. Dawning at the Sarangkot viewpoint to see Annapurna glow pink is one of Nepal's great free experiences. The town is small enough to walk everywhere.
