Phuket vs Koh Lanta: Skip the Crowds, Find Better
$250–$450 per week
Both islands sit on Thailand's Andaman coast with access to the same Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay day trips, but Koh Lanta is quieter, greener, and costs 40–50% less without the Patong-style party scene.

🏖️ Phuket, Thailand
Phuket was once Thailand's most beautiful island and in parts it still is — Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts, the Phi Phi Islands day trip, and a few quieter beaches on the west coast remain wonderful. But Patong Beach, the island's tourism epicentre, is now a sprawling strip of neon bars, go-go clubs, souvenir stalls, and aggressive tuk-tuk touts that bears no resemblance to the Thailand most visitors imagine. The island is overdeveloped, heavily trafficked, and many beaches are so crowded with sun loungers there's no room to lay a towel. Prices have risen sharply while quality in tourist zones has dropped.
🌴 Koh Lanta, Thailand
Koh Lanta Yai is a long, laid-back island in the Andaman Sea with a completely different atmosphere from Phuket. The 25-km west coast has a series of uncrowded beaches — Klong Dao, Long Beach, Klong Nin — backed by low-key bungalow resorts and seafood restaurants rather than high-rises. The southern tip is protected as Mu Ko Lanta National Park, offering snorkelling among healthy reefs and sea turtles. Koh Lanta Old Town, on the quieter east coast, is a stilted fishing village with Chino-Portuguese shophouses and a Muslim fishing community. The island genuinely shuts down in low season and stays authentically local.
