💃 Seville, Spain
Seville is Andalusia's showpiece capital — the Real Alcázar, the Gothic Cathedral (and La Giralda tower), the Barrio Santa Cruz, and flamenco at Casa de la Memoria are all spectacular. But Seville in high season (April–June, especially during Semana Santa and the Feria) is intensely crowded and very hot. The tapas bars immediately around the Cathedral and Triana bridge charge tourist prices. Accommodation anywhere near the historic centre is expensive for what you get, and the city's extreme summer heat (July–August regularly hits 42°C) makes it genuinely uncomfortable.
🌊 Cádiz, Spain
Cádiz is one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a sun-bleached Atlantic port on a narrow peninsula jutting into the ocean. Its old town — entirely surrounded by sea — has a unique Caribbean-influenced feel from its colonial trading past. The city beach (Playa de la Caleta) is right in the old town. The Torre Tavira camera obscura offers stunning panoramic views over the ochre rooftops. The Mercado Central is superb for fresh tuna (atún de almadraba), and the city's carnival (February) is considered Spain's best. Cádiz is unpretentious, genuinely local, and often overlooked in favour of Seville.
